The Vietnamese government has called on ministries, sectors, and localities to intensify efforts to promote cashless payments in a bid to prevent tax evasion and combat criminal activities, Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc said encouraging non-cash transactions aims to meet the payment needs of citizens and businesses while ensuring strict enforcement of laws against violators.

The State Bank of Vietnam will continue to upgrade payment infrastructure and financial technologies to facilitate the expansion of cashless transactions nationwide.

A recent survey by local web browser Coc Coc showed that about 59 percent of daily transactions in Vietnam are conducted without cash, rising to 72 percent among people aged 25 to 44.
