A total of 88,700 enterprises with total registered capital of 1,225.2 trillion Vietnamese dong (53.3 billion U.S. dollars) were set up in Vietnam in the first eight months of this year, down 2 percent in quantity and up 6.5 percent in capital over the same period last year.
Between January and August, there were nearly 1,700 new firms in the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector, up 30 percent over the same period last year; over 26,300 firms in the industry and construction sector, up 7.7 percent; and 60,600 in the service sector, down 6.3 percent, according to the country's General Statistics Office on Tuesday.
The number of newly-established enterprises in August still increased by 1.5 percent compared to the previous month, said the office, noting that as the resurgence of new COVID-19 cases in the community took place at the end of July, it has affected too heavily on the psychology of the business community.
Between January and August, over 32,600 firms, which had temporarily ceased operations due to different difficulties, resumed their activities, posting a year-on-year increase of 27.9 percent. Meanwhile, another 10,353 enterprises were dissolved, down 1.9 percent.
Last year, Vietnam saw 138,100 enterprises established with total registered capital of over 1,730 trillion Vietnamese dong (75.2 billion U.S. dollars), up 5.2 percent in quantity and up 17.1 percent in capital against 2018.
