Vietnam's auto sales down in 7 months

Vietnam's total automobile sales in the first seven months of this year stood at 131,248 units, a year-on-year plunge of 28 percent, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Wednesday.

Specifically, sales of passenger cars declined 29 percent to 94,275 units compared to the same period last year, those of commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses decreased 23 percent to 34,821, and those of special-purpose vehicles fell 39 percent to 2,152.

Sales of domestically assembled automobiles decreased 22 percent, while those of imported ones stumbled 36 percent, said the association.

In July alone, 24,065 automobiles were sold in the Vietnamese market, up 0.3 percent against June this year, in which sales of passenger cars went up 0.1 percent to 17,593 units, those of commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses up 0.4 percent to 6,133, and those of special-purpose vehicles up 10 percent to 339.

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam spent over 2.9 billion U.S. dollars on importing completely-built automobiles and components for assembly, posting a year-on-year decrease of 32.6 percent, according to the country's Ministry of Industry and Trade.
