On 29 January, the 2nd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Diplomatic Working Group Meeting was held in Kunming, Yunnan. Participants discussed the arrangement of LMC Leaders' Meeting and possible outcomes.

From 23 to 24 February, the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Diplomatic Working Group Meeting was held in Sanya, Hainan. To prepare for the 1st LMC Leaders' Meeting, participants discussed the outcome documents.

On 23 March, the 1st Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Leaders' Meeting was held in Sanya, Hainan Province. Premier Li Keqiang co-chaired the meeting with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha of Thailand. Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong of Laos, Vice President Sai Mauk Kham of Myanmar and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh of Viet Nam were present. The meeting issued the Sanya Declaration of the 1st LMC Leaders’ Meeting and the Joint Statement on Production Capacity Cooperation among the Lancang-Mekong Countries, published the Joint List Early Harvest Projects, and confirmed the"3+5 Cooperation Framework". This meeting marked the official launch of the LMC.

On 14 June, the Lancang-Mekong Countries Joint Working Group on Connectivity convened its 1st meeting in Kunming, Yunnan, marking the official establishment of the Joint Working Group. 

On 23 June, the 1st Joint Working Group Meeting on Poverty Reduction for Lancang-Mekong Cooperation was held in Guilin, Guangxi, marking the official establishment of the Joint Working Group. 

On 13 September, the Lancang-Mekong Countries Joint Working Group on Production Capacity Cooperation convened its 1st meeting in Nanning, Guangxi, marking the official establishment of the Joint Working Group.

From 10 to 13 October, the 2nd preparatory meeting for the establishment of a center for comprehensive law enforcement and security cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region was held in Yunnan Province.

From 9 to 11 November, the 4th LMC Diplomatic Working Group Meeting was held in Beijing. Participants discussed the implementation of outcomes of the 1st LMC Leaders' Meeting and next steps, in order to prepare for the 2nd LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the 4th LMC Senior Officials' Meeting scheduled to be held at the end of the year.

From 22 to 23 December, the 2nd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the 4th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Senior Official' Meeting, the 5th Diplomatic Working Group Meeting, as well as the 1st Meeting of Joint Working Group on Diplomatic and Priority Areas were held in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. During the 2nd LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, parties reviewed the implementation of outcomes of the 1st LMC Leaders' Meeting, and planned the next-stage development of the LMC. The meeting also reviewed and approved three important documents, namely, the Joint Press Communiqué of the 2nd LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the Progress Report on the Implementation of Outcomes of the 1st LMC Leaders' Meeting, and the General Principles for the Establishment of Joint Working Groups on the LMC Priority Areas.
